Hearing God's Voice in the Stillness

In the Bible, we read how powerful the voice of the Lord can be:

“The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.” (Psalm 29) Yet God also desires to speak to us gently and personally. This is beautifully expressed in the well-known Psalm 23: “He leads me beside peaceful waters.” In 1 Kings 19:11–13, Elijah tries to hear God. But he doesn’t find Him in the fire instead, God comes in the whisper of a gentle breeze. To hear His whisper, we truly need to be still. And that’s not easy in a life that sometimes rushes past like a speeding train…

My Morning Rush

Even before my alarm goes off, our toddler is beside our bed. “Mama, what day is it? Am I going to preschool?” I take a moment to wake up and gather my thoughts. I try to read a Bible verse, but my mind is all over the place. Still, I say, “Good morning” to God. “Fill me up.” Meanwhile, our eldest daughter wakes up. I prepare breakfast while my husband fills lunchboxes. The kids chat, I comb hair, help with zippers and shoelaces, pray for more patience, and cycle with the kids to elementary and preschool.

Coffee with God

When I get home, the breakfast dishes are still on the table. A pile of work awaits but I make coffee. This is my date with God. When my thoughts begin to wander, I write them down to clear my mind. Reading a piece of Scripture or listening to a worship song helps too. When the noise finally settles, I notice the scent of coffee in my mug and the colorful flowers in the garden. I thank God. Then I hear a gentle whisper in my heart: “It doesn’t all have to happen today.” Peace washes over me. I feel loved by Him. The more often I truly become quiet, the more familiar that voice becomes. From that place of rest, I try to walk with Jesus through my day.

Recognizing God’s Voice in Silence

God longs to spend time with us. Maybe you’re not a coffee person but perhaps you enjoy something else. Listening while running, walking, driving, or engaging in something creative… It’s beautiful to find something you can enjoy together with God. What helps you truly become still?
