God is infinitely creative, and His ways of communicating are just as diverse. One of the powerful ways He speaks is through impressions. An impression is an idea, feeling, or sense that often forms without conscious thought. We know this phenomenon from everyday life—think of the intuitive sense you have the moment you meet someone for the first time.
Almost all Christians receive God’s voice through impressions given by the Spirit. Often we fail to recognize these divine nudges. We dismiss them as coincidences or stray thoughts.
Impressions in your thoughts
The Holy Spirit can suddenly bring a thought to mind, completely separate from your normal train of thought. For example, you haven’t spoken to someone in years, and suddenly that person comes to mind. Moments later, you read something about them on social media. The Holy Spirit may then prompt you to pray for that person.
Many of our thoughts sound familiar, which makes us assume they are all our own. We tend to label “random” thoughts as illogical or irrelevant. Yet thoughts can come from ourselves, from God, or from the enemy. Paul speaks in 2 Corinthians 10:5 about taking thoughts captive. It is therefore crucial not to automatically accept every thought as our own or as true.
Impressions through feelings.
Another way to receive impressions is through feelings. You are simply going about your day when suddenly you have a strong sense that you should do something. For example, you are on your way somewhere and suddenly feel impressed to take a different route. Even if it seems illogical or unexplainable, the impression can be overwhelming.
A relative of mine once felt a strong urge to visit someone. There was no particular reason, and the person didn’t live nearby. Yet she decided to follow this powerful impression. When she arrived, no one was home. But an inner prompting urged her to look behind the house. There she found the woman in a shed, in tears. “Where did you suddenly come from?” she said. “You’re just in time—I was about to take my own life.” This is an example of how the Spirit can lead us through an unexplainable impression.
Impressions through emotions
Sometimes God speaks His heart through your emotions. This may mean that you feel in your soul what someone else is experiencing, or what the Lord feels for the person you are serving. God’s thoughts are always without condemnation and full of love, grace, protection, joy, forgiveness, mercy, and comfort.
Some people are more “feelers” in the Spirit. They quickly sense the atmosphere in situations and are sensitive to what others carry. If someone is depressed, these feelers may pick up on it and feel the same emotion. If this sensitivity is not recognized as spiritual, it can seem as though these emotions are their own.
People who receive impressions this way are not always understood. Sometimes they are labeled “emotionally unstable” or “overly sensitive.” In reality, many of these feelers are people with a prophetic gift. They possess a sensitivity—and the accompanying gifts—to experience God’s heart. Many feelers experience a burden, deep emotions, joy, or sorrow that are not their own. Often they recognize this as the Lord placing a “prayer burden” on them. The urge to pray does not lift until they have interceded for specific people, situations, or nations.
Impressions in your body
Finally, the Holy Spirit can give you an impression that you physically feel. This may be a warm sensation or a tingling in your hands or on your head. As you walk with the Holy Spirit over time, you often develop a personal “language” through which you learn what He is saying. For example, you may sense that God wants to heal the person you are praying for. Sometimes the sensation relates to a group, or to something the Lord wants to do in a gathering. In Mark 5:30 we read the story of the woman with the issue of blood. Scripture describes how Jesus knew what had happened because He felt power go out from Him.
Learning to listen and discern
How can we learn to listen to the impressions God gives us through our thoughts, feelings, and bodies? What should we pay attention to? First of all, it is crucial to spend much time with the Lord. This helps us grow in recognizing how He speaks.
It also takes time to mature in this. If we are still very self‑focused, or if we carry unresolved or unhealed emotions, our perception can become inaccurate. It is important to store God’s Word in our hearts and test our impressions against it. As we grow in this, impressions can become a valuable way of walking in intimacy and obedience with the Holy Spirit along unexpected paths.
