Sharing God’s love during the maternity week

Let me begin by introducing myself. I’m Mery Jaspers. For nearly 35 years, I’ve been married to Hans, and together we’ve been blessed with five daughters and one son. And for the past two years, we've had the privilege of being called grandpa and grandma.

Now, I’ve had the honor of working as a maternity nurse for five years. When families welcome me into their home, they receive Jesus too because He lives in me. My prayer is that families may experience something of God’s love during this special week in their lives.

Often, there's a moment during the maternity week to share something about faith. God is the Creator of the miracle lying in the cradle, so that often opens the door to a conversation.

“When families welcome me into their home as a maternity nurse, they receive Jesus too.”

I regularly hear stories from people who grew up with faith but became wounded or disappointed somewhere along the way, leading to a different view of God. I encourage them to read the Bible. It speaks so much about God's love as a Father, about Jesus giving His life for us, and about our spirit being connected with the Holy Spirit. That is the truth and the truth truly sets you free!

My work often involves waiting between maternity assignments. In this waiting time, I ask God to place me in the right home, with the right family. I pray for the upcoming birth and the baby that will be born.

“In this waiting time, I ask God to place me in the right home, with the right family.”

Just recently, I had a beautiful experience during a birth. The mother was at a birthing center where I assist during deliveries. As her labor progressed, she needed additional medical support from the hospital. The hospital floor above was full, meaning she would have to be transferred by ambulance to a different hospital. While she was breathing through her contractions, I prayed for another solution and I sensed that she was praying too. Moments later, the midwife returned to say that a space had unexpectedly opened up upstairs.

I said, “I don't know if you have faith, but I prayed for this.” She replied, “So did I.” These are precious moments, where we can tangibly experience how deeply He loves us.
