Listening with the ears of your inner being

God Speaks!

God speaks—through the Bible, a feeling, dreams, a song, a whisper in your heart, images, other people, and more. But does God also speak to children? Can they truly hear His voice? Absolutely! In fact, children are often more open to hearing God’s voice precisely because of their childlike openness and wonder.

In Matthew 11:25, it says:

"At that time Jesus answered and said, 'I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent, and have revealed them to little children.’”

A Dream and a Divine Bandage

Our 5-year-old daughter, who sometimes struggles with fear, told us one night that she’d had a dream where she felt very afraid—but then God put a bandage on her. By morning, she couldn’t remember the dream, but I was able to explain that God never leaves her when she’s afraid, and that He’s always with her. As a mother, I was amazed at how God spoke to her—so tenderly, and on her level.

Learning to Hear God’s Voice

On YouTube’s Dikke Vriendenshow, Herman Boon playfully teaches children how to recognize God’s voice—by asking, trusting, waiting, listening, and writing down their impressions.

Time for a (Learning) Moment with Your Child! Let’s Make It Practical and Tangible!

Action Plan: Draw two large ears on a sheet of paper and cut them out. Explain that we don’t usually hear God’s voice with our regular ears, but rather with the “ears of our inner being.” Attach the ears to each side of your child’s heart or tummy, and explain that you can hear God's voice inside—as a gentle whisper in your heart, a feeling in your belly, a picture in your mind’s eye, or a thought in your head. God wants to speak in many different ways.

Quiet Listening Practice

Sit quietly with your child and close your eyes together. Ask God if He wants to say something to you. After about a minute, gently ask:

  • Did you feel anything?

  • Did you have a thought?

  • Did you hear or see anything on the inside of your eyes?

With practice, children may realize they’ve heard that voice before and begin to recognize it more.

Just Like Samuel

When God called Samuel, he first thought it was Eli. After a few tries (with Eli’s help), he realized it was God speaking. In the same way, we can learn to recognize God’s voice by continuing to ask and listen.

Creative Ears Activity – Ready for More?

Did your child enjoy the creative ear activity? If they love working with their hands, try a new prayer moment together. Ask God to show your child a picture. What comes to mind? What do they see? Which image? What colors?

Break out the clay, LEGO, markers, paints, and paper... and start crafting!
